Phillippe Gilbert Menetou-Salon Blanc
Menetou-Salon lies in the same "Kimmeridgian" basin that extends through Sancerre to Chablis and Champagne - basically all our favorite minerally, food-loving French wines. Philippe Gilbert was trained as a dramaturg, producing and also writing plays for the theatre (our kind of people!). When his father neared retirement, however, he returned to save the family business that his distant ancestor Francois Gilbert began in 1768. His return reinvigorated the domaine and he introduced both organic and biodynamic viticulture.
The grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks followed by 14 months on the lees.. This is a gorgeous wine, more lush than most Sancerre, but with the same crackling acid backbone. An absolute pleasure on the palate. Only 3600 bottles enter the US market each vintage. Shouldn't you own one?
